How to Make Honey Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry
Start with one pound of raw uncooked shrimp. Try to buy Jumbo or Extra Large size shrimp – see our guide on shrimp sizes if you’re not sure. Here are some tips to thaw shrimp quickly before cooking in case they’re frozen.
If you’re planning on serving with rice and vegetables, then start cooking them before starting the shrimp. Here are the three main steps to make honey garlic shrimp stir fry:
Step 1 – Make the Honey Garlic Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, garlic and ginger. Using minced fresh garlic and ginger will give you the best flavor, but you can substitute 1 tsp each of powdered garlic and ginger in a pinch.
Step 2 – Marinate the Shrimp: Add the shrimp and half the sauce to a ziplock bag or bowl and mix. Let it marinate for 5 minutes or up to 24 hours. Reserve the remaining sauce.
Step 3 – Sauté the Shrimp: Place your wok or skillet on medium-high heat and add the oil. When hot, add the marinated shrimp in a single layer and sauté for one minute. Then flip the shrimp (kitchen tongs like these ones are helpful), add the reserved sauce and sauté for one minute more until the sauce just starts to glaze the shrimp.
What to Serve with Honey Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry
Honey garlic shrimp is perfect on top of steamed rice, or brown rice if you want a healthier option. Drizzle any extra sauce from the pan onto the rice for extra flavor.
You can also add a side of veg to make a complete meal. Steamed fresh broccoli is an easy option, and you also can try bok choy or snap peas in keeping with the Asian theme. Yum!

Lovely recipe. I use ZIPLOCK bags like they are going out of style. Stupid is what stupid does.
Hi Bayou, That’s great to hear and congrats! Thanks for your comment
Can you use ground ginger?
Hi Patricia, You can definitely substitute in ground ginger, although it won’t be as flavorful as using fresh. Hope that helps!
Hi! I love the recipe, thanks for sharing!
Is there chance you could please omit the use of ziplock bags? They are convenient but they end up polluting the oceans and beaches, and it only takes a few seconds to wash a bowl.
Thanks so much!
Hi Irlands, Thank you for your review and I couldn’t agree more. We’ll add to the list for the next update. Why can’t someone make a biodegradable ziplock!?
I have never met a shrimp dish I haven’t loved, but that honey garlic sauce? Wow, wow wow….. I wanted to just eat it by the spoonful… it was perfect with the shrimp– the right balance of flavors… We devoured this at our house ! Thanks so much!
